Cellular Glass - FoamGlas Insulation

Cellular Glass - FoamGlas Insulation

Cellular glass (known as foam glass) insulation, as it is known in the glass foam industry, is one of the rare insulation materials that can be used in both cold and hot lines.

Glass foam, i.e. cellular glass, has a heat transmission coefficient in accordance with ASTM C552 standards. It has thermal conductivity coefficients of 0.080 W/mK at +200 °C, 0.040 W/mK at 0 °C and 0.022 W/mK at -160 °C below zero. Water vapor permeability is zero. The service temperature range is -268 °C to +482 °C.

Cellular glass is applied differently in hot or cold insulation.

Glass Foam in Cold Insulation
In cold insulation application, glass foam is fixed with various adhesives and mastics and sealing is ensured. No adhesive or mastic is used in every application. The main thing here is the owner of the design. But in both applications, the main thing to be considered is the elimination of gaps during the assembly of cellular glass (foam glass). In addition to Foam Glass brand adhesive / sealant products, Foster production adhesive / sealants are also frequently preferred here.

Since cellular glass (foam glass) is a vapor-proof material, it is one of the 3 most preferred products in the cold insulation sector. The uses of cellular glass (foam glass) in cold industrial insulation are generally LNG and oxygen plants, liquefied ammonia pipelines and tanks. Cellular glass (foam glass) is used in ammonia tank bottom insulation due to its dimensional stability and resistance to high compressive load, as well as its heat conduction performance at low temperatures.

Hot Insulation Glass Foam (Cellular Glass - Foam Glass)
The main purpose of using cellular glass (foam glass) material in hot insulation application is that it is very resistant to chemicals and corrosion and has no absorbent properties. For example, mineral wool insulation materials, due to their structure, may cause leakage in equipment or pipelines, the leakage product may be absorbed by the insulation material and create a risk of burning. Even if the product does not burn, the insulation material made of mineral wool is absorbent, thus delaying the leak detection considerably until the material reaches the saturation point or deformation of the coating is observed due to the weight. However, cellular glass (foam glass) eliminates these risks thanks to its non-absorbent structure and high chemical resistance. Safety holes are drilled on the coating on the glass foam insulation at regular intervals. In case of a possible line leakage, leakage is detected through these holes and intervened immediately. At the same time, the vapor permeability of the product is zero, its pest resistance is very high and it has a longer life than mineral-based insulation materials.

Some aspects of the application of Cellular Glass (Foam Glass Insulation) are as follows.

Glass foam insulation (cellular glass - foam glass) is fixed with the help of filament tape or stainless steel circles according to the application type and surface.

By applying multi-layer foil between two or more layers of cellular glass, corrosion and possible vapor transitions between surfaces due to vibration are prevented.

Materials such as aluminum, steel, galvanization and its alloys, pvc, hdpe, pp, ctp can be used as coating material.
